Entry 08

The first settled wager

Shichida UK came to us with a fragmented site and a four-month clock. On 26 September, Web Design Awards made it a winner. The fee was earned. Here is the whole story, because a ledger entry without a narrative is just accounting.

The wager is easy to describe at a dinner party. A client pays us to design and build their website; we submit it to independent juries; if none of them recognises it within four months of launch, the fee is cancelled. People like the idea. What they ask next is whether it has ever actually happened — whether the clause has ever been tested in the wild, with someone else's money attached.

Now it has. Shichida UK — the British home of Japan's whole-brain early learning method — is the first entry in the ledger with a real fee at stake. On 26 September 2026, Web Design Awards named it a winner, with an aggregate score of 7.50 against their seven public criteria. The wager settled. The fee was earned.

The brief nobody envies

Shichida UK arrived with the brief that quietly defeats most redesigns: three audiences, one site. Prospective families who have never heard of whole-brain learning and need the philosophy explained without jargon. Enrolled parents who need a resource hub, not a brochure. And the business itself, which needs the site to do a commercial job — trial bookings and enrolment — without feeling like a funnel. The previous presence had grown fragmented and difficult to maintain, which is the polite way of saying it had stopped serving all three.

Say "warm and playful, but credible" to a room of designers and watch it produce gradients and rounded corners. The actual problem is harder: an education site is read by anxious people making an expensive decision about their child. Every pixel either lowers that anxiety or raises it.

What the scoresheet noticed

The seven criteria are public, so we can talk about them plainly. The two highest scores were accessibility (8.00) and performance (7.90) — the two categories that have nothing to do with taste. Content and storytelling came next at 7.80, which is the copy and the structure doing the philosophy-explaining work. Visual design scored 7.20, and we note without complaint that it is among the lowest numbers on the sheet.

That profile is not an accident. It is the argument of this entire studio expressed as a row of decimals: the floor wins before the ceiling does. A parent on a school-run handset with one thumb free is the design brief. The jury just happened to agree.

Why we are not disappointed

There is a joke we are contractually obliged to make: the guarantee means we only earn when the client wins, so a settled wager is, technically, the boring outcome. The interesting outcome — the one where we work for free and the industry gets a story — did not happen. Fees cancelled to date: £0. We intend to be disappointed by that number forever.

The next entry is unwritten. It takes about nine questions to find out whether it should be yours.
